The 10th Anniversary of When East Meets West, Sounding the Chords of Cultural Exchanges

2019-11-20

On November 20th, the "When East Meets West" 2019 Beijing concert sponsored by Reignwood Cultural Foundation was held at Reignwood Theatre. The famous opera master and conductors from the West and Chinese artists including Liu Shikun, Yan Shouping, Zhang Ye, and Ma Fei gathered together to perform classical shows at home and abroad including Moonlight on the Spring RiverJasmine Pietà rispetto, amore from the opera Macbeth and other classics. This cultural program “When East Meets West" is showing the cultural confidence of China in the new era.

Liu Shikun, a famous Chinese pianist, composer and music educator, the national first-level Jing Hu performer Yan Shouping and Western opera master, all of whom are 80-year-old, completed their performance with great passion. Their performance infected all audiences on the scene. At this concert, Chairman Yan sang an excerpt of the modern Peking Opera "Taking the Tiger Mountain by Strategy"—I have the Morning Sun in My Heart to pay homage to the great era.

Music and art are common languages of mankind, bringing people from different cultural backgrounds closer together. In order to build a platform for cultural exchanges between the East and the West as well as to spread China's outstanding traditional culture, Chairman Yan established the "When East Meets West" cultural brand in 2009. He joined hands with Sarah Brightman, the London Symphony Orchestra and other world-class artists and art groups to show the essence of Eastern and Western cultures in a pluralistic form, and built a bridge for dialogue between many outstanding young artists and international masters.

This concert is also a tribute to "When East Meets West" which has lasted for ten years. Over the past decade, nearly a hundred cultural events including "Peaceful Sky", "Born for Songs", "World Opera Vocal Competition", "APEC Night Beijing Opera and Opera Concert" were held, singing the melody of “Cultural has no borders and friendship lasts forever”.

In order to better promote the cultural exchange and mutual learning between China and the world, the "footprint" of Reignwood Cultural Foundation has travelled from Beijing to Hong Kong, London, Singapore, the United States and other countries and regions, and is promoting people to people exchanges and mutual understanding among countries. In recent years, in responding to the country’s Belt and Road Initiative strategy and the “Golden Decade” of Sino-British relations, Reignwood Cultural Foundation has also planned special themed programs such as “Beautiful China” and “the Silk Road Journey”, gaining wide international recognition.
